How to Wash & Care for Goalkeeper Gloves (Make the Grip Last)
Goalkeeper gloves are a consumable — but good care can double their life. Here's exactly how to wash, dry and store your gloves so the grip lasts season after season.
Goalkeeper latex is designed to wear down — that's what makes it grippy. But the difference between gloves that die in a month and gloves that last a season almost always comes down to care. Here's the routine that keeps the grip alive.
Wash after every session
Dirt, sweat and dust clog the latex and kill grip. A quick wash after each use is the single most important habit.
- Rinse both palms under lukewarm water (never hot).
- Add a little glove wash or mild soap and gently massage the latex.
- Rinse until the water runs clean — no soap left behind.
- Gently squeeze out the excess. Never wring or twist.
Dry them the right way
- Lay them flat, palm up, or hang them by the fingertips.
- Keep them out of direct sunlight and away from heaters — UV and heat crack latex.
- Let them dry until just slightly damp, not bone dry.
Store them properly
Once dry, keep the palms apart — pressing latex against latex makes it stick and tear. A glove bag or wrapping the palms in a clean cloth works well. Don't leave them balled up at the bottom of your kit bag.
Keep grip alive on match day
Latex grips best when damp. Lightly wet the palms before kickoff and top up at half-time. A dedicated grip spray gives you more consistent tack than water alone, especially on dry, dusty pitches.
Know when it's time to retire a pair
Even perfectly cared-for gloves wear out. Replace them when the palm latex is smooth, shiny and cracked, or when grip drops off no matter how clean they are. Many keepers keep a fresh match pair and an older training pair to stretch their budget.
