Best Goalkeeper Gloves for Wet Weather & SA Conditions

From Highveld thunderstorms to a wet coastal winter, grip in the rain is everything. Here's what to look for in a wet-weather goalkeeper glove — and how to keep grip when it pours.

Best Goalkeeper Gloves for Wet Weather & SA Conditions

South African keepers deal with everything — dry, dusty highveld pitches one week and a proper downpour the next. Wet conditions are where cheap gloves fall apart and good ones shine. Here's how to choose a glove that grips when it's soaking.

What makes a glove good in the wet

The right latex

Wet-weather grip comes down to soft contact latex that stays tacky when damp. Some latex is optimised specifically for wet play. It wears a little faster, but the grip in the rain is worth it.

A roll finger or hybrid cut

Because roll finger cuts wrap more latex around the ball, they generally grip better in the wet than a tight flat cut. A hybrid gives you that grip with a snugger fit.

A grippy backhand

In the rain you punch and parry as much as you catch. A backhand with textured latex — not just smooth fabric — helps you clear a wet, heavy ball.

Technique matters as much as the glove

  • Keep the palms damp, not soaked. Wipe off excess water — a film of moisture grips; a puddle doesn't.
  • Carry a small towel and wipe the palms between phases of play.
  • Catch into your body where you can, so a wet ball has somewhere to go if it slips.

Look after them afterwards

Wet, muddy gloves need a proper clean the same day, or the grit grinds the latex down. Follow our wash and care routine and never dry them on a heater.

Our pick for SA conditions

The Gecko Cut is built around grip and a locked-in fit, which is exactly what you want when the ball gets slippery. Compare it with the rest of the glove range, and if you're unsure which pair suits your pitches, get in touch and we'll help you choose.
